Educational Resources

The best place to start, if you have questions about whether your school-aged child has a disability that may be impacting his/her ability to learn, is your local school.  Public schools are obligated to find and identify any child within their school boundaries who may have an educational disability.  These disabilitities include:  Autism, Developmental Delay, Emotional Disability, Hearing Impairment, Intellectual Disabilities (Mild, Moderate and Severe), Other Health Impairment, Speech/Language Impairment, Specific Learning Disability, or Visual Impairment.

If your child already receives special education services and you have questions related to your child's services contact the school first.  If you still have questions or concerns after talking with the school you may want to contact your state's department of education (see below).  The department of education provides resources and assistance for parents of students receiving special education services.  Feel free to email Sharon McQueary, Regional Disability Advocate for Classis of the Southwest, if you have questions regarding special education.  Sharon's career has spanned over 20 years in special education in Arizona.

ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION EXCEPTIONAL STUDENT SERVICES

The Exceptional Student Services (ESS) mission is to provide high quality service that builds capacity to improve outcomes for all students. The vision of ESS is that all students, including students with disabilities, are well prepared for the next step – college, technical/trade school, career, job, or other means of engagement. To achieve this vision, ESS is establishing a system of supports that wraps around educators to improve student outcomes—academically, behaviorally, and functionally.
